HISTORY
Before becoming Divino, this building was Casa Fages, the residence of one of the most influential families in Figueres and the Empordà.
The house was built in 1852 and, for generations, was closely linked to the Fages family, a lineage deeply connected to the political, cultural and social life of the city.
Among its former owners were Carolina de Perramon and Narcís Fages de Romà, whose oval portraits can still be seen today in the hotel lobby.
Their story seems almost taken from a novel: Carolina’s father opposed their relationship, so the couple resorted to what was known as a judicial abduction, with her consent, in order to finally be able to marry.
Carolina and Narcís were the great-grandparents of Carles Fages de Climent, a poet and writer born in this very house in 1902 and one of the great cultural figures of the Empordà.
Fages de Climent also maintained a close friendship and artistic collaboration with Salvador Dalí, who illustrated several of his works.
Among the portraits preserved in the hotel is also one of Pope Pius IX, one of the most prominent figures of the 19th-century Catholic Church.
The reason why his portrait was part of Casa Fages remains, for now, a small mystery. The same is true of another portrait preserved beside the staircase, whose identity we are still trying to uncover with the help of descendants of the family.
When Fimedhotels acquired Casa Fages, the challenge began: transforming a historic 19th-century residence into a hotel while respecting the essence and memory of the building.
These images show some of the spaces in the house before the renovation: the starting point of a transformation that sought to bring together history, architecture and a new way of experiencing the building. Today, that Casa Fages of 1852 is Hotel Divino.
